Pre-amplified Omni-directional microphones

For the majority of uses, there are two different microphone variations — unidirectional and omni-directional. Both receive sound vibrations from external sources that are then converted to electronic impulses; unidirectional microphones, however, primarily receive sound that is directly aimed into their center and this serves the purpose when it is related to one speaker or instrument but lacks utility when it is related to sound arriving from a multitude of directions. Omni-directional microphones, on the other hand, are able to pick up sounds coming from practically any direction due to the electronic pick-up element being situated in the center of a mesh covered dome.

Omni-directional microphones are often recognized by their distinctively rounded ends, while unidirectional microphones are usually recognized by their flat mesh end. The omni-directional microphone’s characteristically sensitive electronics is usually protected by a heavy mesh bulb as this keeps foreign materials from entering the microphone’s inner chamber as well as prevents ‘breath pops’.
