In the days before electronic surveillance was possible, the only way to keep things ‘secure’ was to 'keep an eye on it', hire guards or to make access to an item ‘impossible’.

With the advent of the Video Cassette Recorder the CCTV or Closed Circuit Television Security System was able to maintain a ‘documented video record’ of all events that were subject to the camera view through the use of a video cassette. The quality was not as great as we have today, but with technological advancements the quality of recordings and image clarity grew. 

A particular jump in this quality was the development of the DVR or the Digital Video Recorder which greatly enhanced the quality of recorded images as well as the volume of what could be recorded by way of a Video Surveillance System.
